Junior Newsletter – 7th May 2008

The Junior Section of Boston Angling will be re-launched this year with the emphasis on new and novice anglers. All youngsters will be welcome but the main effort will be on introducing those who fall into the `beginner-novice-improver' bracket, to the sport of Angling. Provisions will be made for those who have advanced through these stages by, hopefully, continuing with the Inter-Schools Competitions and also sending teams to compete in various other events.

Angling is a great way to get young people interested in a worthwhile activity that not only amounts to learning new skills, but also opens up the world of the countryside and nature in general.

Starting on Wednesday 21st May 2008, at 6pm, there will be a weekly evening coaching session that will continue throughout the warmer months. The first one will be at Thorn House Fishing Lakes, near the Boston Golf Course at Cowbridge. A very small charge per person (a nominal sum), will be made on each evening.

Fully Licensed, National Federation of Angler's Coaches will be supervising these Sessions. All Coaches are CRB checked, First Aid Trained and hold `Safeguarding and Protecting Children' Qualifications. Experienced helpers who also have similar qualifications will be on hand to assist with the coaching.

Just turn up on the first, or any subsequent Wednesday, evening to get involved with this worthwhile and interesting activity.

All England Junior Pole Championships

Willow Park, Aldershot. Saturday 19th May 2007.

After the recent rains and with a freshening wind, the resident F1 carp were reluctant to feed for many of the 40 young anglers taking part in the match for the resurrected trophy, last competed for in 1999.

Sixteen of the anglers taking part have been selected for England trials over the next few weeks, and so it proved to be a close fought match between the ten teams taking part, from as far afield as Oxfordshire, Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire, Sussex, Surrey and Hampshire.

With the anglers using small and middle lakes at Willow Park all competitors were up for a good days sport. Jake Marshall, Farnborough Pink, found the skimmers and small carp feeding from the start at 12mtrs and caught steadily throughout for a top weight of 50lbs 6oz from peg 6 on small lake. Also on the small lake was team mate Luke Morley 37lbs 3oz (peg24) who alternated between 6 and 12mtrs to keep the fish coming all day. Third place fell to Boston’s top angler Nicholas Wright who weighed in 35lbs 15oz by fishing well up in the water throughout, and catching most of his fish in the last hour from peg 26. Continuing on the small lake and fourth spot went to Sam Stubbington of Farnborough Gold taking 34lbs 1oz from peg 16.

Team Honours followed the individual results with Farnborough Pink dropping just 3 points for a top score 37pts. 2nd were Farnborough Gold 31pts, 3rd place going to Lincolnshire’s Boston Bombers, fishing the venue for the first time and accruing a decent 29pts. Joint 4th were Dorking A & Farnborough Blue 24pts each whilst 6th spot went to newly formed local team Aldershot Park  A/C 18pts. 7th Godalming 17pts, 8th Dorking B 15pts, 9th North Oxford 12pts, and finally 10th Kings Lynn Golden Rods 11pts.

Section winners:- A Samantha Perkins Dorking A ; B Sam Stubbington Farnborough  Gold; C Matti White Farnborough Blue; D Ben Lockwood Farnborough Pink.

Despite that eight year break since the last competition, it is hoped that this match will again take place annually at Willow Park. Match organizers Colin Dance & Dave Rance thank all the teams for their support, and Nick White and family for their help and hospitality, and look forward to next years event.

BOSTON V LINCOLN

SHANDKEV FISHERIES, CHAPEL HILL

SATURDAY 26TH MAY

This annual event was hosted by Boston Youth Angling Club at Shandkev lake, Chapel Hill.  The two eight-a-side teams found the resident carp spawning and with the silver fish reluctant to feed, bites were hard to come by.

Top individual was Matt Brandon (Lincoln) 12lbs 10oz fishing peg 20 with carp of 6lbs 12oz & 4lbs 14oz. The bigger fish of the two came to his roach rig and after snagging three times, finally came to the net after 40 minutes.  2nd place went to ten year old Ciaran Woodhouse (Lincoln) with three carp and roach for 11lbs 11oz and joint 3rd were Boston lads James Taylor & Reece Dillamore both with 8lbs 4oz. 5th place fell to Danny Martin (Lincoln) 7lbs 15oz and 6th Nicholas Wright (Boston) 7lbs 11oz.

Team result:-The Team trophy went to Lincoln for the second year running with total weight of 55lbs 6oz to Boston’s 36lbs.

Our next outing will be the start of the new river season and the weekly Wednesday evening club night’s starting on 20th June fishing the Bargate Drain meet Windsor Bank footbridge. Any youngsters wanting to take part and learn more about fishing and joining the club should contact club manager Dave Rance 01529 461415.

NFA Junior National Championship

 Grand Union Canal, Milton Keynes

Saturday 7th July.

Four practice sessions for this premier event on the Grand Union Canal gave everyone of the Boston teams much confidence as plenty of fish were caught on each occasion. But what a difference the weather can make as bright sunlight after all the rains brought about a stuttering catch rate as bites came and went, a result of which the Intermediate and Junior teams finished well down the list in 15th and 16th place respectively.

Jake brings home the bacon as team grab silver

A totally different story from the Boston Cadets and despite a last minute setback when a late rule change meant that two anglers had to drop out and replacements found, they excelled themselves in bringing home a total of no less than eleven medals and a silver trophy for second place overall. Adding to this, if that was at all possible, was the fact that they also produced the Individual Cadet Champion in the shape of Jake Gallagher who weighed in a total of 1.520kgs.

This team of six, which consisted of David Ewing, Josh Winner, Sophie Williams, Chris Weedon, Bradley Proctor and Jake Gallagher are all aged between 11 &12yrs and begs the question – what can they achieve in following years? Three of the team gained section wins, making it a great effort to claim that runner-up spot with 31 pts, not too far behind the heavily sponsored Smart Bait Leeds outfit who won with 36pts.

Another local angler 15 year old Luke Morley, now fishing for the Farnborough & District Junior team, took ninth place overall and was selected to fish at the Fish O Mania event to be shown on Sky television a week on Saturday.

The next junior fixture is on Sunday 15th July at Ten Mile Bank and any members wanting to take part should contact team manager Dave Rance 01529 461415.

Kings Lynn match 15th July

The Kings Lynn Junior match took place on Sunday on the Chapel stretch of the Ten Mile Bank, part of the R. Ouse. Following on as it did, the day after the Division 3 NFA championship, this was never going to be easy for those youngsters taking part. And so it, proved to be the case as seven dry nets were recorded and most sections were won by the odd big fish to swimfeeder, or pole fished worm. A single bream indeed settled the issue as Lynn’s Kayleigh Williams tempted one large fish to feeder tactics. Best net was probably that of James Wright who clinched second by taking an all roach catch to pole and maggot, followed by our own Nicholas Wright who added a tench to a few bits.

Individuals: - 1 Kayleigh Williams Kings Lynn Gold 5lbs 12ozs; 2 James Wright Holbeach 5lbs 4ozs; 3 Nicholas Wright Boston 4lbs 10ozs.

Two sections wins, plus a second and third from the Boston’s team of Luke Morley, Reece Dillamore, Tyrell Dawson, & Nicholas Wright ensured a comfortable win as Holbeach took the runner-up spot ahead of hosts Kings Lynn.

Teams :- 1 Boston 7pts; 2 Holbeach 11pts; 3= Kings Lynn Gold & Blue

NFA East Midlands Match 8th September

The NFA East Midlands Junior Match took place on the Chesterfield Canal at Retford and was the run for the first time in three years. Cloudy skies and a good bit of colour gave the five teams taking part some hope of catching a few fish. The results from the previous week’s National showed 4lbs from most pegs but as usual the fish did not feed as expected and most struggled for a few bites, with half a kilo of small roach and gudgeon a good weight. The Boston team of six anglers managed 3rd spot with 19 points, behind the two local sides Pride of Derby Juniors on 12 pts and the host side Worksop A the winners with 11pts, on a low points basis.

Top individual was Karl Moore of Worksop from end peg 11 below the bridge – bream and skimmers making up the weight, and top Boston rod Joe Paton in 6th with 0.590Kgs.

1 Karl Moore Worksop 3.670Kgs; 2 Nick Board Pride of Dearby 1.200Kgs; 3 Reece Nicholson Worksop 0.820Kgs; 4 Brian Muir Pride of Derby 0.630Kgs.

East Coast Junior League Round 1

S. Forty Foot Drain 24th September

The first round of the East Coast Junior league was fished on Sunday using the new platforms and car park at Wyberton Chain Bridge on the S. Forty Foot drain. Thirty two young anglers were taking part so it was uncertain as to how the venue would fish as these sort of numbers are nowadays a rarity. A & B sections, using the pegs nearer the car park, have been in regular use and produced the top weights on the day but weights gradually fell away and only 9ozs were required to win D section.

Top rod came from section A in the shape of Lincoln’s John Holden who used pole and maggot at 8metres for a nice net of roach and skimmers. Similar tactics brought second spot to Boston’s Reece Dillamore, as was the case for team mate Tyrell Dawson at the first peg.

1 John Holden Lincoln B 7lbs 3ozs; 2 Reece Dillamore Smurfs Elite 6lbs 10ozs; 3 Tyrell Dawson Smurfs Elite 6lbs 8ozs; 4 Cameron Flowers Holbeach A 5lbs 14ozs.

Dropping just two points, last year’s champions Smurfs Elite continued where they left off and section wins from both Reece Dillamore and Luke Morley, adding to seconds from Nicolas Wright and Tyrell Dawson, saw them head the table by a single point. Holbeach A leads that chasing pack and will no doubt give them a run for their money over following rounds in other parts of the county this coming winter.

1 Smurf’s Elite 6pts; 2 Holbeach A 7pts; 3 Lincoln B 18pts; 4 Boston Raiders 19pts; Lincoln A 20pts; 5 Kings Lynn Blue 22pts; 6 Kings Lynn Gold 24pts; 8 Holbeach B 27pts.

 Lincs Junior Championship 30th September

The EMAF Junior match scheduled for Saturday 29th was unfortunately cancelled due to lack of support and so we move on to the Lincs Junior Championship the following day. A sharp frost greeted the 60 young anglers to the Fossdyke Canal at Lincoln on Sunday and the bright sunlight that followed did not bode well for good fishing, proving to be so on most sections for all categories. The cadets were involved in a close battle for the top individual places on the golf course section and Scunthorpe’s Josh Barker just managed to hold on to the top spot ahead of in- form Boston lad Chris Weedon.

1 Josh Barker Scunthorpe1lbs 4ozs; 2 Chris Weedon Boston 1lb 1 ½ ozs; 3 Mathew York Scunthorpe 1lb 0 ¾ ozs.

Even though both Chris Weedon and Hannah Kitchen won their sections, two team members short meant that they finished just one point behind Lincoln, with Scunthorpe, the only team with a full complement, taking first place. 1 Scunthorpe 7pts; 2 Lincoln 13pts; 3 Boston 14pts.

The junior contingent landed a few more fish but Boston found themselves well beaten into fourth place, 16pts behind the winners Lincoln.

Individuals: 1Rocky Murley Holbeach 4lbs 7 ½ ozs; 2 Ryan Liddard Scunthorpe 4lbs 6ozs; 3 Ben Dixon Scunthorpe 3lbs 9ozs.

Teams: 1 Lincoln A 7pts; 2= Holbeach (8lbs 6oz) & Scunthorpe Red (5lbs 9oz) 14pts; 4 Boston 16pts.

Another ding-dong battle in the intermediate category saw Boston lads Nick Wright and Joe Paton both winning their sections and with Reece Dillamore & Tyrell Dawson taking second in section, their 6pts total was far too good for both Lincoln and Holbeach who tied for second on 9pts.

The 2007 Individual Lincolnshire Championship went to Boston’s Nicholas Wright who beat team mate Joe Paton by a touch over a pound, Holbeach lad Rocky Murley a further 5ozs down in third.

1 Nicholas Wright Boston 5lbs 13 ½ ozs; 2 Joe Paton Boston 4lbs 12ozs; 3 Rocky Murley Holbeach 4lbs 7 ½ ozs; 4 Ryan Lithguard Scunthorpe 4lbs 6ozs; 5 John Holton Lincoln 4lbs 5ozs.

Over £800 worth of prizes and trophies made this was by far the best competition of the season as all participants went away with an armful of goodies. Our thanks go to Kevin Martin and Lincoln AA for a great day out.

East Coast Junior League Round 2

S. Holland Drain 14th October

A fine and warm start to this second round match of the East Coast Junior League on the S. Holland Drain at Sharps Bridge on Sunday. The drain having produced good weights in previous weeks, the 32 young anglers looked forward to the match and were not disappointed. They were all shown the way by local lad James Wright who easily won the day with a good net of roach and small skimmers, fishing pole at 10metres. Fish were shoaled tightly in this area and Kings Lynn’s Damian Evans also made double figures from the next peg, as did Boston lad Nicholas Wright who was pegged close by.

Individuals: 1 James Wright Holbeach 14lbs 14ozs; 2 Damien Evans Kings Lynn Blue10lbs 10ozs; 3 Nicholas Wright Smurfs Elite 10lbs 9ozs; 4 Kirsty Read Kings Lynn Gold 8lbs 10ozs; 5 Luke Morley Smurfs Elite 8lbs 8ozs; 6 Tom Cockle Kings Lynn Gold 7lbs 4ozs.

The team results were once again tight but the Boston based Smurfs Elite just held on to the top spot  by a single point ahead of Holbeach, thanks to Tyrell Dawson & Luke Morley both winning their sections.

Teams: 1 Smurfs Elite 7pts; 2 Holbeach A; 3 Kings Lynn Gold 17pts; Lincoln A 20pts; 5= Boston Green & Holbeach B 21pts.

After this round the destination of the title is already down to a two horse race as two points only separate the main contenders Holbeach and Smurfs Elite (Boston), with the rest vying for third place at some 25 points and more distance.

1 Smurfs Elite 13pts; 2 Holbeach A 15pts; 3= Boston B & Lincoln A 40pts; 5 Kings Lynn Gold 41pts.

The next round will now take place on Sunday 4th November on the Fossdyke Canal at Lincoln, please note that change of date.

East Coast Junior League Round 3

Fossdyke Canal 4th November

A bright sunny Sunday morning greeted youngsters to round three of the East Coast League at Burton Waters on the Fossdyke Canal on Sunday. Unfortunately a near frost took its toll on this match and the six competing teams found the fish hard to come by, only those being drawn in A section nearest the marina entrance managed to catch more than the odd small perch.  Top rod was Lincoln reserve angler Jonathon Skidmore, who fished short pole to nearside weed bed for mostly small perch and gudgeon and took the day’s only pound plus weight.

1 Jonathon Skidmore Lincoln 1lbs 14ozs; 2 Brendan Strolger Holbeach A 12 ½ozs; 3 Joe Paton Boston Smurfs 7 ¼ozs.

With only one angler catching from C section and a draw out of the hat in D section to decide the section winner, this was the worst match in the league to date, as only nine of the competing anglers managed to catch anything at all. On the team front, Lincoln failed to take advantage of home draw and finished third behind a depleted Boston Smurfs, and Holbeach A in top spot.

1 Holbeach A 15pts; 2 Boston Smurfs; 3 Lincoln 18pts.

League placing after three rounds; 1 Boston Smurfs & Holbeach A 30pts; 3 Lincoln B 60pts; 4 Lincoln A 62pts; 5 Boston Green 64pts; 6 Kings Lynn Gold 65pts.

Next round will take place on the Cut-off channel at Hilgay, 25th November.

The Boston Junior presentation night is on Friday 23rd November at Kirton Community Centre; admission is free and a raffle will be held to go towards the cost of the buffet. The evening will start at 7.30pm and we hope to have a local paper on hand to take some publicity photos, so please try and get all your friends and family to come along for a fun night out (please try and let me know how many in your party so we can arrange the food). Could those who hold annual trophies please return them to local tackle shops ASAP.

East Coast Junior League Round 4

Rushfield Lakes 18th February

The coldest day of the year so far greeted 28 young anglers to fish the fourth round of the East Coast Junior League at Rushfield Lakes, Potter Handworth, The start time was delayed by an hour to give the sun a chance to warm things up, but unfortunately much more was needed to break through the ice as all but five pegs were frozen over.

As expected the going was slow but as the ice continued to melt away the larger carp began to show in some spots. Damien Smith Kings Lynn found three carp for winning weight 8lbs 5oz from peg 22: James Wright Holbeach managed two for 5lbs 5oz from peg 19 and from the next door peg 18 Adam Kirby of Lincoln a single fish of 3lbs 12oz for third. With the carp all shoaled up on one bank the rest were left to snatch a few small roach for their sections points.

 (A) Mattie Smith Lincoln 1lb 8oz; (B) Alan Smith Holbeach 15oz; (C) Nicolas Wright Smurfs Elite 3lbs 8oz; (D) Trafford Nunns Lincoln 1lbs 10oz.

Both Boston teams really ended up with a bad draw and had to contend with badly iced up pegs as well as lack of big fish, leaving Holbeach A to take top position.

1 Holbeach A 9pts; 2 Lincoln B 13pts; 3 Kings Lynn Gold 17pts; 4= Holbeach B & Lincoln A  21pts; 6 Smurfs Elite 26pts; 7 Boston Green 27pts.

League to date:1 Holbeach A 39pts; 2 Smurfs Elite 56pts; 3 Lincoln B 73pts; 4 Kings Lynn Gold 82pts; 5 Lincoln A 83pts;  6 Boston Green 91pts; 7 Holbeach B 93pts.

East Coast Junior League Round 5

North Level Drain 9th March

Round 5 of the East Coast Junior League took place at Swan Bridge, Parson Drove instead of the R. Glen. A fine and much warmer Sunday morning saw the seven teams of youngsters tackling the North Level drain and all anglers managed to put some fish in the net for the first time since September. Almost a mirror of the previous day’s match as top rod was also drawn at peg 1 next to the bridge, being local lad Brendan Strolger from Holbeach. He too caught roach to 6ozs but this time used pole and pinkie at 9m for the winning weight. Peg 5 also came up trumps and gave Kyle Woodhouse from took full advantage to clinch second, just 5ozs over Boston’s Reece Dillamore.

1 Brendan Strolger Holbeach AC 8lbs 2ozs; 2 Kyle Woodhouse Lincoln A 6lbs 15ozs; 3 Reece Dillamore Smurfs Elite 6lbs 10ozs.

Section winners: (A) Joss Cade Lincoln A 3lbs 13ozs; (B) James Wright Holbeach 6lbs 4ozs; (C)Danny Martin Lincoln A 5lbs 12ozs; (D)Joe Elliker Boston Green 2lbs 7ozs.

Teams were led home by a good solid performance from Lincoln A with two section winners for their 6pts, second place Smurfs Elite with 8pts, 3rd Holbeach A 11pts and 4th Boston Green, with only three anglers, 18pts –  5th came Kings Lynn Gold on 21pts.

League to date: 1 Holbeach A 50pts; 2 Smurfs Elite 64pts; 3 Lincoln A 89pts; 4 Lincoln B 98pts; 5 Kings Lynn Gold 103pts.Next round will take place at Dents Farm 30th March.

East Coast Junior League Round 6

Dents Farm, Hilgay 30th March

This latest round of the East Coast junior league took place at Dents Farm, Hilgay on Sunday. The 7 teams took up all 28 of the pegs on Two Island lake. Fishing on a bright sunny day, and with the wind pushing the carp tight around the islands, and into the corner pegs, some of the young anglers struggled for a bite.

Not so for Boston’s Luke Morley who fished from peg 4 with feeder tight to the island and took carp to 8lbs for a runaway victory. He more than doubled the next best weight, that of team mate Harry Marsh who chose the same method for his second place. Apart from the winner, arguably the performance of the day was surely that of 9 year old Keiron Woodhouse at peg 1 who fished pole in the margins for carp and bits for his third position, fourth going to local lad Damien Evans who chose waggler tactics instead for barbel.

1 Luke Morley Smurfs Elite 66lbs 2ozs; 2 Harry Marsh Smurfs Elite 25lbs 4ozs; 3 Keiron Woodhouse Lincoln A 23lbs 14ozs; 4 Damien Evans Kings Lynn 20lbs 8ozs.

The teams were shown the way home by the Smurfs who turned in a near perfect score of 5pts with Reece Dillamore joining Luke and Harry as section winners and Nicholas Wright second in section. Runners-up on the day were Lincoln A 17pts, third local side Kings Lynn Gold on19pts and fourth Lincoln B 21pts, with the two Holbeach sides left struggling in 5th & 6th places respectively with 26 & 28pts.

League positions to date:- 1 Smurfs Elite 69pts; 2 Holbeach A 76pts ; 3 Lincoln A 106pts; 4 Lincoln B 119pts; 5 Kings Lynn Gold 122pts.

Next round Dents Farm One Island Lake 13th April.

East Coast Junior League Round 7

Moat Lake Tattershall 8th June

The delayed final round of the East Coast Junior league was held at Moat Lake Tattershall on Sunday 8th June. After Saturday’s rain this bright sunny Sunday saw the carp hard to come by for some of the young anglers fishing this final match of the series. Following on from Saturday’s big winning weights, the 28 anglers involved were hoping for a good day’s sport, and some points to sort out the very close individual and league positions.

As always the draw for these matches can be vital and with two top teams Smurfs and Holbeach drawing next to each other it turned out to be an interesting day. Top individuals in the individual points race, Reece Dilamore and Brendan Strolger, were separated by just the one point and with the nerves playing a big part for both anglers (not to mention the parents) this also proved to be a great battle.

Top dog on the day was Smurfs Luke Morley who fished for carp using pellet and corn from peg 3. The rest finished way behind and in second was team mate Nicholas Wright who chose similar tactics, followed by Damien Evans of Kings Lynn.

1 Luke Morley Smurfs 53lbs 3oz; 2 Nicholas Wright Smurfs 22lbs 4oz; 3 Damian Evans Kings Lynn Gold 17lbs 9oz; 4 Danny Martin Lincoln B 14lbs 2oz; 5 Mattie Smith Lincoln B 11lbs 15oz.

Never really any doubt as to the final outcome and two section winners not only gave the Smurfs a win on the day by a single point from Lincoln B, but merely confirmed them as league winners by the handsome margin of 25 points over Holbeach.

Teams: 1 Smurfs 8pts; 2 Lincoln B 9pts; 3 Lincoln A 14pts; 4 Boston Green 15pts; 5 Kings Lynn Gold; 6 Holbeach A 22pts.

Final Individual positions: 1 Reece Dillamore Boston Smurfs 22pts; 2 Brendan Strolger Holbeach A 23pts; 3 Luke Morley Boston Smurfs 24pts; 4= James Wright & Cameron Flowers Holbeach A, Mattie Smith Lincoln B 29pts.

Final Team positions: 1 Boston Smurfs 84pts; 2 Holbeach A 109pts; 3 Lincoln A 136pts; 4 Lincoln B 145pts, 5 Boston Green & Kings Lynn Gold 169pts.

All the young anglers would like to thank their parents, helpers and angling clubs for their support during this year’s competition.
